CCCFPD News This Week - July 10th, 2014

imageThe Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is proudly hosting a certification training event all week for the John Muir Health Child Safety Coalition. The Coalition is a group of local public safety agencies, police & fire departments, non-profits, and other organizations committed to providing services for child passenger safety and inspects c!hild safety seats.

Year after year studies have shown that nearly 3 out of every 4 child safety seats are not installed correctly or are being used by a parent or caregiver improperly. In a recent study released in March 2014 of this year, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) highlighted the fact that of children 8 years and under that died in a motor vehicle crash in 2012, 31% were unrestrained. In separate studies, 43 children ages 2-14 have died after being left in a vehicle in the heat in 2013. Year to date this year, 13 children have died after being left in vehicles.

Your local firefighters from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and in joint collaboration with the United Professional Firefighters of Contra Costa County have made great strides over the past three years since the inception of their Child Passenger Safety Program to reduce that startling statistic locally.

Members of the Coalition are spending four days this week learning extensively about child passenger safety, vehicle occupant safety systems in cars today, how to properly inspect child safety seats, and the many dangers children are exposed to in & around vehicles. The nearly week long training culminates with a public event where the technicians inspect multiple vehicles with child safety seats & safety features from a wide range of vehicle make and models. If successful the students will become Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPST) and some will be joining the other certified firefighters from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

If you would like to have your child’s safety seat inspected you are invited to do so by making an appointment with John Muir Hospital by calling (925) 941-7900 and pressing option 3. The public car seat inspection event is by appointment only and will be held from 2-4 pm at the CCCFPD Training Division, 2945 Treat Blvd., Concord, 94518.

In a time when similar programs have been cut from other public safety agency budgets, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District understands the importance and peace of mind this service provides. We strive to provide this service at no cost into the future for the families we protect in Contra Costa County.
